Evolving Safe Deposit Lockers: What’s New with SafeStore Auto

As customer expectations around access, security and convenience evolve, so too must the technology behind secure storage.

Gunnebo Safe Storage’s latest update to its SafeStore Auto system responds directly. With more than 2,000 units installed across 38 countries, SafeStore Auto has already established a global footprint. This new iteration builds on this foundation with practical upgrades reflecting how people and businesses now interact with physical security systems.

Adaptable Design for Modern Environments

One of the key updates to SafeStore Auto is its increased adaptability. The system is available in three formats - Mini, Midi, and Maxi – offering for SafeStore Auto Maxi flexibility for everything from compact hotel lobbies to large multi-floor banking environments.

A new modular locker configuration with SSA Maxi, allows operators to tailor systems to the exact needs of their space and users.  Instead of a fixed vault layout, the number and size of lockers can be adjusted during setup or as needs change over time. This reduces both installation time and material usage - specifically, steel consumption has been cut by up to 20%.

Regardless of scale, the modular nature of the design makes it easier to integrate into existing architecture or expand as needed. It’s a response to the growing demand for more efficient, space-conscious secure storage solutions in both private and public sectors.

Real-Time Monitoring and Smarter Management

Beyond physical upgrades, SafeStore Auto now includes technology that improves both the user experience and system oversight.

A new high-precision scale has been added to individual lockers, enabling real-time weight monitoring of stored items. This data connects directly to Gunnebo’s SafeControl Manager software, which allows operators to adopt billing models based on actual locker usage rather than fixed pricing. It’s a more transparent and efficient approach for both service providers and customers.

Security has also been addressed with the introduction of an occupancy sensor in the self-service cabin. The system can detect unexpected activity - such as multiple users entering during a single session - and trigger an automatic stop to the transaction. These settings can be fully customised to user profiles with an intelligent set up and tailored detection settings, offering both flexibility and control.

24/7 Access

SafeStore Auto continues to focus on secure, autonomous access. Users interact with the system via card reader, PIN code, and biometric identification—all managed through an encrypted platform.

This approach not only enhances security but also often removes the need for staff assistance. In a time when most access requests occur outside regular business hours, the ability to offer a 24/7 service is essential.

Whether it’s an early-morning visit to a locker or a late-night deposit, users expect the same level of service and security. With these updates, SafeStore Auto supports this expectation while giving operators more flexibility in how they manage and scale their secure storage offering.
